Twitter is a magical place as far as I'm concerned and here is why I say this.
Retweets can grow your message like magic. Let's say ten of your followers retweet your message. Each of them has 200 followers. 2000 people see your tweet. If just one out of a hundred retweet your message another twenty people will retweet. Your audience is now 30 times larger than when you started. If that's not magic I don't know what is.
So how do you get retweeted?
Author of The Social Media Marketing Book, did a study on what works so you won’t have to.
According to Dan timing is not everything but it is important. Depending on your audience twitter traffic increases and decreases in cycles. Over all there is a better audience on Friday afternoon. People want to know what you are doing for the weekend is my guess.
They scan for words or phrases and the top ten that get noticed and retweeted are: you, twitter, please, retweet, post, blog, social, free, media, and help.
The ones that jump out at me are please and retweet. As always if you want someone to do something the best way to make that happen is ASK! You just add Please Retweet to a tweet that leads back to your post and bingo. Some people may not read the blog post but it only takes a second to retweet so they help you out.
If you put a retweet button on your blog post as well they may even retweet you twice. That can be very cool. The thing is to make it as easy as possible and rewarding as possible for your audience to spread the word.
Make sure you twitter auto retweet your blog posts. If you're not auto tweeting your blog posts, you're missing the boat because there would be a link back to your post automatically included. That means when someone retweets your tweet it includes a clickable link to your blog post.
But here is the key element. The first five words out of your mouth or on the page need to draw your audience in. Shock them, scare them, turn them on and tune them in. Catch their attention, make them curious and then be sure to deliver what you offer. Don't trick them and expect them to come back. A retweet is a gift of referral and it will go badly for you if you are a trickster.
The post title has to be compelling and it has to be relevant to your follower’s interests. Then you need to have under promised and over delivered. Provide good content by knowing your stuff. Tell your audience how they will benefit by reading your post and then cut out the fluff. Don't dance around the subject just give them the goods. They will appreciate it and (retweet) tell a friend.
If you found this article of value tweet it out. Copy and paste a link to where ever you found it into a tweet. You win by passing along good content. The person who posted it on their blog/site gets more traffic and I get another reader. It's a win win win.
